No, this is an entirely justified question and by no means overly pedantic.
In principle, you are supposed to cite the published version, not the working paper if the contents that you use is in both versions.
Here are the exceptions:
1. If the published version is shorter, you might often find some interesting information only in the working paper.
2. If you, despite all your effort, do not get hold of the published version, you may (in exceptional cases remember) cite the working paper version, but then add "published 2004 in Journal of .... Economics 23(1), 55-78" to the reference.
However, you should not do so if the journal is available in JSTOR or EbscoHost
